LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western Spartans opened the 2018-19 preseason with an 87-69 loss to the visiting Windsor Lancers Thursday evening at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C.

With a number of new faces in the line-up the TWU had struggles connecting at times early on and trailed Windsor 47-29 after the opening half. But the Spartans, had better play in the final 20 minutes and were able to match the Lancers point-for-point, 40-40, in the second half before falling 87-69.

TWU Head Coach Aaron Muhic
On the game
"Windsor is a good team. They are smart and shoot the ball well. It was a very good game for us to open with. We didn't execute very well in the first half. We just went out and played and the ball did not go inside out so we didn't shoot very well and our defence wasn't very good so we dug ourselves a bit of a hole. But as a group in the second half we played much better on both ends of the floor."

On the play of his posts
"Our bigs played really tough. Both on offence and defence. We had to play some of them in positions that they normally do not play, which made it hard to run the plays we want to run. We are dealing with a number of injuries in the forward position, so we might have to make some adjustments."

  • The Lancers lost to the national champion Carlton in the OUA semi-final last season.
  • It was Windsor's fifth OUA semi-final in six seasons.
  • Of the 10 players who dressed, four, Kyle Helsloot, Andrew Goertzen, Borja Soriano, and Isaiah Reimer, were wearing TWU colours for the first time in tonight's contest.

On Saturday the Spartans will match up with the Seattle Mountaineers for the annual exhibition match. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre. TWU will then head do Saskatchewan for the Huskies tournament October 18-20. The Spartans open Canada West conference play against the UBC Okanagan Heat on October 26-27.
