NIEDERMAIER SCORES, BUT SPARTANS DROP PRESEASON TILT ACAC CHAMPIONS

EDMONTON – Playing the defending ACAC (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference) champion MacEwan Griffins, the Trinity Western men's hockey team dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision in preseason action Saturday.

After falling behind 2-0 in the second period, the Spartans Florian Niedermaier (Davos, Switzerland) made it a one-goal game with a power play marker in the third period. From there, TWU pushed to even it up and had a few chances late, but were unable to fine the tying goal.

Elijah Vilio (Aldergrove, B.C.) and Kaleb Denham (Innisfail, Alta.) had the assists on Neidermaier's goal.

Spartans goalie Lucas Mills (Burnaby, B.C.) made 40 saves in the loss.

The Spartans were outshot 42-13.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Barret Kropf
"I thought the guys had a great effort tonight. I thought we were able to keep our structure and play a pretty good team game. Playing against the defending ACAC champions, they have a really strong team and returned most of their players from last year, but it was another good showing from our guys. Now we're looking forward to getting another week of practice in as we prepare for UBC."

NEXT UP
The Spartans return home to play UBC in the final game of the Captains Cup Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre. The winner of their game with the Thunderbirds will earn the Captains Cup title.
