FONTAINE NAMED BCIHL PLAYOFF MVP, MATTHYS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

LANGLEY, B.C. – Trinity Western’s Jarrett Fontaine (Humboldt, Sask.) was named the BCIHL’s Playoff MVP, while Spartans goalie Silas Matthys (Wollerau, Switzerland) was named the ANYTHING BRANDED Player of the Week. Along with Fontaine and Matthys, TWU forwards Evan Last (Surrey, B.C.) and Jordan Rendle (Surrey) and defenceman Dustin Deugau (Calgary) were named to the BCIHL’s Playoff All-Star Team.

Fontaine put his name on the scoresheet on each of the Spartans goals in a 4-1 title-clinching Game 2 s over Selkirk College on Saturday night, scoring twice and picking up a pair of assists to lead TWU to its first-ever championship win.

Those four points brought Fontaine's postseason total to 10 in just four games, tying him with linemate Last for the playoff scoring lead. He also enjoyed a five-point game in TWU's first round opener against Victoria and picked up a helper on the Spartans first goal in Game 1 of the finals against the Saints.

Last (10 points) and Rendle (nine points) formed an explosive unit alongside Fontaine and the trio finished 1-2-3 in postseason scoring. Deugau continued his strong play as one of the league's best two-way defencemen, while Matthys picked up four straight wins while allowing just two goals on 74 shots against Selkirk.

Meanwhile, Matthys was named the ANYTHING BRANDED Player of the Week for the week following the championship series.

The fifth-year netminder ended his BCIHL career in the ultimate fashion on Friday night, making 41 saves to net a 4-1 win over Selkirk College in Game 2 of the BCIHL Finals. Matthys' performance included 22 saves in the first period as the Saints tried to stave off elimination.

The 25-year-old was also key in Game 1 on Thursday as he made 31 saves in TWU's series opening 5-1 victory over Selkirk.

Matthys was especially good in the Spartans sweep of the Saints, finishing the series with a 1.00 goals-against-average and an outstanding .972 save percentage. He closed out the 2018 BCIHL playoffs with a 4-0 record, a 1.50 GAA and a .949 save percentage.
