LANGLEY, B.C. – Trinity Western’s men’s hockey team will aim to make team history this Saturday (2 p.m.) at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre, as the Spartans take on UBC in the final game of the inaugural Captains Cup, with the winner taking home the tournament title.
If TWU is to capture the first ever Captains Cup, which is a round robin tournament that also featured Simon Fraser University, the Spartans will make a second piece of history, as the men’s hockey team has never beaten a U SPORTS opponent.

With the Spartans picking up a 2-1 victory over SFU and the T-Birds knocking off the Clan 8-3, Saturday’s tournament finale will act as de facto final, with the winning team earning the right to raise the Captains Cup.
The Spartans are coming off a road weekend in Edmonton which they lost 7-6 against Concordia (ACAC) and 2-1 against defending ACAC champion MacEwan.
Since UBC beat the Clan to open its preseason, the T-Birds split their weekend series with Queen’s University on home ice. UBC dropped the first game 2-0 before earning a 2-1 win the following night.
The Spartans and T-Birds faced each other for the first time last year in exhibition play, with UBC winning 3-2.
