TWU SPARTANS (1) AT NORTHERN IDAHO (1)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS TIE NORTHERN IDAHO CARDINALS
COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho – The Trinity Western University Spartans got their first point of the 2014 pre-season with a 1-1 tie in men's soccer action against Northern Idaho College Friday evening at Eisenwinter Field in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The tie improves TWU's record to 0-1-1 in pre-season play.
"The boys responded well today and it was a good game on our part as we worked on folding in some new systems of play," said TWU head coach Pat Rohla. "Little disappointed with the tie, but we had full value for our effort and I was encouraged by our young players and the way our back line played."
The Cardinals opened the scoring in the second minute when NIC took advantage of a "field condition" slip by TWU's centre back. After that opportunity the Spartans back line was solid as they prevented the Cardinals from developing any more scoring chances.
TWU second year midfielder Sebastian Wingfield got the tying goal in the second half for the Spartans when he converted a cross from third year defender Nico Verseveldt. "It was a great build up play and a stellar cross from Nico to find Sebastian," commented Rohla.
TWU fourth year keeper Evan Lowther played the full ninety in net for the Spartans.
The Spartans will now return to Spokane to take on NCAA Div. I Gonzaga University on Saturday at 5 p.m.
Trinity Western opens Canada West conference play on Friday, September 5 when they will host the Fraser Valley Cascades.
