SPARTANS SHUT-OUT BY VIKINGS 

BELLINGHAM, Washington – Vikings midfielder Gabriele Zaccagnini scored on a free kick in the 74th minute as Western Washington University earned 1-0 victory over Trinity Western University in a men's soccer exhibition game Saturday afternoon at Robert S. Harrington Field on the WWU campus. 

The goal came after a foul wide on the left about 20 yards from the end line.  Zaccagnini floated in a right-footed free kick which went into the upper right corner for the only goal of the game.

TWU had a 16-15 advantage in shot attempts, but WWU goalkeeper Keegan Rogers made five saves to earn the shutout win. The Spartans Andrew Hicks played the full 90 for TWU and made two saves in the loss.  Midfielder Cam Parks led the Spartans with four total shots, with one on target.

The Spartans, who end their pre-season with a record of 0-3-1, will open Canada West play Friday, Sept. 5 when they will host the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades. Game time at Rogers Field is scheduled for 7 p.m. TWU will then travel to Vancouver Island to play the University of Victoria on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. at UVIC. 

The Vikings, who lost their first two exhibition games, 2-0 to Seattle University and 5-0 at University of British Columbia, opens their regular season with a road trip to Southern California where it will play Cal State L.A. on Thursday, Sept. 4 and UC San Diego on Saturday, Sept. 6.

Match Notes: TWU and WWU each finished with four corner kicks…the Spartans also had the better in shots on goal with a 5-3 edge over the Vikings…TWU was called for six off-sides, while WWU had two…
