SPARTANS MOVE ON TO KEG CUP FINAL WITH WIN OVER UBC

VICTORIA – Trinity Western's Vito Polleto (Calgary) scored the game's only goal as the Spartans advanced to the Keg Cup final with a 1-0 win over UBC Saturday afternoon.

Polleto took a pass from Vagelli Boucas (Langley, B.C.) and, from the top of the box, whipped a left-footed offering past the Thunderbirds keeper.

James Hielema (Calgary) earned the clean sheet in his first start with the Spartans.

TWU will play Fraser Valley in the Keg Cup final Sunday at 4 p.m. (PT). The Cascades beat Victoria on penalties in the semifinals.

"I thought our boys came out and played hard and did the work that we needed to do defensively to get the win," said Spartans coach Mike Shearon. "We were also able to create some chances and it was great to see Vito convert his opportunity. I thought we were deserving of the win. James did a great job and made a number of crucial saves at the end to seal the victory. I asked the guys to live up to our standard and push our standard forward and I thought that, for the most part, we did a good job today."

The Spartans last won the Keg Cup in 2015, when the beat Victoria 2-1 in the semifinals and UBC 2-1 in the final.
