WATERMAN SCORES LATE TO SECURE ROAD TIE WITH UNBC

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – Trinity Western's Joel Waterman (Aldergrove, B.C.) scored in the 89th minute to salvage a point for the No. 10-ranked Spartans after a wild game saw TWU and UNBC play to a 3-3 draw Friday.

After TWU (1-1-2) opened a 2-0 first-half lead, the Timberwolves (0-0-2) roared back with three second-half goals, including what appeared to be a likely game-winner early in the 89th minute. However, less than a minute after the Timberwolves took the lead, Waterman struck back for TWU to earn a much-needed road point.

TWU's Cody Fransen (Lynden, Wash.) scored in the first minute of the game before Vaggeli Boucas (Langley, B.C.) doubled the Spartans lead in the 22nd minute.

UNBC responded with Cody Gysbers scoring in the 60th minute and Anthony Preston knotting the game at 2-2 in the 63rd minute.

That set up a crazy finish in which UNBC's Francesco Bartolillo put the Timberwolves ahead in the 89th minute only to see Waterman get the game back on even terms just a few seconds later.

TWU goalie Sebastian Colyn (Langley) finished with two saves on five shots, while UNBC's Rob Goodey stopped just one of the four shots that hit the target.

QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Mike Shearon
"I thought we were in good control of the game in the first half and I thought we played well. Credit to UNBC for continuing to fight. It was one of those games where I felt like in the beginning part, everything we kind of going for us and then nothing was going for us, even though I felt we played well for most of the match. It's unfortunate to settle for a draw.

"Caleb Johnson (Calgary) had a great game today and Joel had a vital goal at the end there. It was a captain's goal really. There were a lot of really good performances tonight. Cody did well and was unlucky not to take a couple more goals. It's frustrating that we got the tie, but it is what it is."

NOTABLE
• Last year, the Spartans drew UNBC twice, playing to 0-0 and 2-2 results at TWU's Chase Office Field.
• The last time TWU played in Prince George, in 2016-17, the Spartans earned 2-1 and 2-0 wins.
• Fransen and Domenic Poletto (Calgary) are now tied for the team lead in goals, with three apiece through three regular season contests.
