LANGLEY, B.C. – Trinity Western second-year goalie Sebastian Colyn (Langley) made a brilliant diving on the Calgary Dinos fifth and final shooter to give the No. 10 Spartans a 2-1 (4-3) win in the Canada West Quarter-Finals Saturday at Chase Office Field.
After a scoreless overtime session, the Spartans buried four of their five opportunities from the penalty spot, while Calgary's Mark Bohdan sent his attempt high and the Dinos Jared Fillo was stopped by Colyn.
The victory sends the Spartans to the Canada West Final Four where they will play Thompson Rivers, who beat No. 6 Alberta in the quarter-finals. The Final Four will be played at UBC.
TWU defender Vaggeli Boucas (Langley) initially put the Spartans ahead 1-0 in the 65th minute before Bohdan equalised in the 82nd minute.
The Spartans finished the night with an 8-2 edge in shots on goal and a 19-7 advantage in total shots.
Colyn made one save over the 120-minute match to earn the win, while Calgary's Jake Ruschkowski stopped seven of the shots he faced.
A tightly contested first half saw several half chances from the Spartans, but little from either squad in terms of top-drawer opportunities.
Holding possession and keeping pressure on the Dinos, the Spartans broke through when Boucas got his head to a Joel Waterman (Aldergrove, B.C.) offering, glancing it past Ruschkowski to open the scoring.
TWU nearly doubled its lead in the 69th minute, but a shot on target from the Spartans Aidan Moore (Langley) saw Ruschkowski come up with a critical save.
Pressing for the tying marker, Bohdan took a ball from Bryce Connors and slammed it home on the short side, beating Colyn to his left.
That setup a scoreless overtime, which ultimately paved the way for penalty kicks.
Through the first four shooters, the teams remained tied, with Bohdan's high attempt and a Ruschkowski save on TWU's Jacob Low (Port Moody, B.C.) being the only misses. After the Spartans Cody Fransen (Lynden, Wash.) put TWU ahead 4-3 on penalties, Colyn guessed right, diving to his left to secure the victory.
TWU Head Coach Mike Shearon
"I have complete confidence in the guys we put out there in penalties. They're guys we have relied on heavily throughout their careers and I knew they would come through. Bussy (Colyn) is always good for one if not two and it was great to see him make that save.
"In some aspect, I thought we were by far the better team, but it's soccer and they got the goal back. We stopped working on that goal and we have to be better at closing games out. That's the disappointing part of it. At the same time, we never gave up and we showed the fight we have shown all year. The trials we have gone through during year has prepared us for moments like this."
• The Spartans beat the Dinos 6-2 in last year's Canada West Quarter-Finals en route to winning a Canada West silver medal.
• TWU has medalled in each of the last two seasons, winning bronze in 2016 to go with last year's silver medal.
• The Spartans and Thompson Rivers, who will meet in the Canada West semifinals, split their regular season series, with TWU winning 3-2 in August before a season-ending 2-1 loss.
The Spartans will now prepare to play Thompson Rivers in the Canada West Final Four next weekend at UBC.
