LAM, YEE SET SPARTANS 1000M RECORDS AT UW INDOOR OPEN

SEATTLE – Trinity Western's James Lam (Langley, B.C.) and Regan Yee (South Hazelton, B.C.) set the Spartans men's and women's 1000m records to lead the Langley-based contingent Sunday at the University of Washington Indoor Open at the Dempsey Indoor.

Lam broke the previous 1000m record with a time of 2:25.65, bettering the previous mark of 2:25.71, which was held by teammate Declan White (South Surrey, B.C.). Right behind Lam in the 1000m was Adam Marshall (Langley), who crossed the line in 2:25.78. Both performances put Lam and Marshall into the Top 12 in the U SPORTS rankings.

Meanwhile, Yee set a TWU record for the second time in as many days and the third time in the last two weeks. Yee's time of 2:42.99 improved upon her own previous TWU mark of 2:44.61. Yee has broken a TWU record in each of her three races this season, previously setting a new school mark in the mile and the 3000m. Yee's 1000m time also puts her atop the U SPORTS rankings and earns her automatic qualification for the national championships.

On the men's side, Caleb de Jong (Winnipeg) was second in the 3000m in 8:14.74, which puts him into top five in the U SPORTS rankings.

Levi Neufeld (Winnipeg) finished first in the mile, with a time of 4:10.77, which converts to a U SPORTS Top 12 time in the 1500m.

In the field, pole vaulter David Boyd (Victoria) cleared a personal best 4.88m to earn automatic qualification for the U SPORTS championships. Giovanni Hernandez (Tepic, Mexico) was TWU's second best vaulter on the day, as he had his best performance as a Spartan, clearing 4.73m to move into the Top 12 in the national rankings.

On the women's side, vaulters Madison Evans (Calgary), Kirsten Dunford (Bellingham, Wash.) and Emma Li (Markham, Ont.) all cleared 3.69m, while middle distance runner Mikaela Smart (Maple Ridge, B.C.) had nearly a 13-second personal best in the 3000m, posting a time of 10:12.38, which puts her in the top five in Canada West.

NEXT UP
The Spartans pole vaulters will compete at the David E. Enarson Gym on the TWU campus Feb. 17, while the rest of the team will prepare for the Canada West championships Feb. 23-24 in Winnipeg.
