Nathan George (Coquitlam, B.C.), who graduated from TWU this spring, will headline the Spartans contingent, as the 400m star will look to defend the Canadian title that he won at last year’s national championships. George, who was a three-time U SPORTS medallist in the 300m, is coming off a strong performance at the Harry Jerome Classic, winning the 400m with a season’s best time of 46.33. Last year, he took the 400m gold medal at the Canadian championships with a personal best time of 45.94. The 2017 IAAF World Championship standard is 45.50.

Meanwhile, fellow 2017 graduate James Linde (Coquitlam, B.C.) has been making noise this summer in the 100m and 200m and will contest both at this year’s national championships. Most recently, Linde ran personal best times of 10.42 in the 100m and 20.76 in the 200m at the Harry Jerome Classic.

On the women’s side, Regan Yee (South Hazelton, B.C.) will compete in a strong 1500m field that will see her enter as the fifth fastest seed with a personal best time of 4:09.29. For Yee, the IAAF World Championships standard is 4:07.50.

For George, Yee and Linde, this summer may also provide a chance to compete at the 2017 Summer Universiade. The top two university athletes in each discipline at this year’s Canadian Championships will have a chance to represent Canada in August in Taiwan. Students who graduated in 2017 are still eligible to compete at the Summer Universiade.

The Spartans will also have five U20 athletes in the mix, with pole vaulters Maddie Li (Markham, Ont.) and Maxime Léveillé (Shefford, Que.), sprinter Ben Tjernagel (New Westminster, B.C.), long and triple jumper Denzel Brown (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) and hurdler Mowa Adeleye (Calgary) all set to compete in Ottawa.

Current Spartans Nick Colyn (Langley, B.C.) and Caleb De Jong (Winnipeg) will both compete in the 3000m steeplechase and will also both look to qualify for the 1500m. David Boyd (Victoria) will also be aiming to qualify in pole vault.

Alum Sabrina Nettey (Surrey, B.C.) is in the long jump completion, while former Spartans men’s basketball player Tyrell Mara (White Rock, B.C.) will attend his second Canadian championships competing in discus.
