SPARTANS REPEAT AS NATIONAL CHAMPIONS WITH FOUR SET WIN OVER BEARS

EDMONTON – The Trinity Western Spartans men's volleyball team won their second straight U Sports national championship with a 3-1 victory over the Alberta Golden Bears Sunday evening at the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton.

The Spartans 25-20, 25-20, 27-29, 25-23 victory over Alberta gives the TWU men's volleyball program their fifth national championship and their second back-to-back championships, having previously won back-to-back in 2010-2011 and 2011-2012.

TWU's third year middle Aaron Boettcher was named player of the game for the Spartans finishing with 14 blocks, six kills and one service ace. While fourth year setter Adam Schriemer, who had 48 set assists in the match, earned tournament MVP honours.

In addition to Boettcher, Blake Scheerhoorn with 22 kills, and two blocks, Ryan Sclater with 12 kills, and five blocks and Eric Loeppky with 12 kills, seven blocks, and four aces led the Spartans.

Alberta outside hitter Taylor Arnett with 16 kills and setter Brett Walsh, named player of the game for Alberta, led the Golden Bears offence.

With the victory, TWU improves their overall record to a program best 38-6, and gives them a 10 game winning streak to finish off the 2016-2017 season.

Tonight's final was the Spartans third straight championship final and for the second year in a row TWU is Canada West and U Sports men's volleyball champions.
