VANCOUVER – The Trinity Western Spartans men's volleyball team opened the Blue Team Cup tournament with a 3-0 win over the Mount Royal Cougars Thursday evening at UBC's War Memorial gym. The 25-20, 25-17, 25-20 improves the Spartans preseason record to 2-1.
TWU head coach Ben Josephson
"I'm happy with the results and happy with majority of our play. At times it looked like preseason volleyball and at times it looked like we are doing really high-level stuff. We defend the ball well and our service pressure was getting closer to what we are striving for. We saw a huge growth in some of our highball management and attacking situation, and are blocking improved a lot since the last time we played."
"We are trying to play some phases of the game that are a little bit complicated and probably beyond our current preparation. But the guys really bought in to doing what we're working on. Overall I'm happy with that as the first game of the tournament and we have four more to continue to build on and we're excited to continue on tomorrow with UBC-O and UBC."
The Spartans will continue the tournament tomorrow morning against the UBC Okanagan Heat at 11 a.m. and will follow up with the UBC Thunderbirds Friday evening at 7 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C.
TWU opens up Canada West conference play on Friday, October 26 in Kelowna, B.C. against the UBC Okanagan Heat. The Spartans conference home opener is on Friday, November 2 against the Alberta Golden Bears.
