CALGARY – The No. 3-ranked Trinity Western men's volleyball team took all six sets from its weekend trip to play Mount Roya, winning 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-18) Saturday.
The Spartans lead attacker was middle Aaron Boettcher (Surrey, B.C.) with a total of 11 kills. The team racked up nine blocks and had an overall serve percentage of 0.743. Cougars Trent Mounter led his team in kills with a total of eight. The team had two blocks and a serve percentage of 0.792.
With the win, TWU, who has clinched a playoff spot, moves into second place with a 14-4 record. MRU drops to 13-5 and is now tied with Alberta for third in the Canada West standings.
The Spartans were the first to go on a real serving run in the first set, when they took an 11-7 lead. The Cougars used their first timeout down by three, 10-13. The Spartans held onto their lead 16-11 at the technical timeout. The Cougars were unable to get a block up to stop the Spartans killer attacks. As the Spartans increased their lead to 19-12, the Cougars called their last timeout. The Spartans ended the set with a tip from Kern at 25-15.
The Spartans maintained a two-point lead over the Cougars for the first half of the second set. The Spartans led 16-13 entering the technical timeout. Still behind 19-14, the Cougars used their first timeout of the set. A few points later, down 23-17, the Cougars called their second timeout. Though the Cougars regained the serve they weren't able to come back. The Spartans took the set 25-19.
In the third set, the teams were tied 11-11. The Spartans pulled ahead by one and were the first to reach 16, entering the timeout up 16-15. Then the Spartans pulled away, creating the first notable lead of the set, at 21-17. A tip from Spartans Boettcher ended the set 25-18 and the match in three sets.
• The Spartans are now 12-2 all-time against MRU.
• TWU has won seven straight matches against the Cougars.
• TWU's last loss against MRU was Nov. 27, 2015 when the Cougars won in five sets in Langley.
TWU will travel to Edmonton to play MacEwan Feb. 8-9.
