WHITE EARNS CANADA WEST BRONZE TO LEAD SPARTANS AT U SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIPS

VICTORIA – Trinity Western's Declan White earned a Canada West individual bronze medal while finishing 12th overall at the U SPORTS Championships Sunday at Beacon Hill Park.

White's third place finish, which saw him cross the line in 31:51 over 10 kilometres, helped the Spartans men's team to a conference bronze medal and an eighth place finish overall amongst all U SPORTS teams.

With his individual result, the fifth-year White earned a Canada West First Team All-Star honour for the fifth time in his career. He is also a Second Team All-Canadian, which marks the second year in a row he has been an All-Canadian. Last year, White finished second overall and was a First Team All-Canadian.

Behind White was fourth-year Caleb De Jong (Winnipeg), who finished seventh in the conference and 24th overall, earning him a Canada West First Team All-Star nod with a time of 32:04. De Jong was also a First Team All-Star in 2016 and a Second Team All-Star 2016.

Rounding out TWU's top five was Levi Neufeld (Winnipeg) who was 48th overall, James Lam (Langley) who was 52nd and Tyler De Jong (Langley) who was 61st.

TWU has now earned a Canada West medal in five consecutive years, winning gold in 2016 and silver in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

The Spartans were racing without third-year Nick Colyn (Langley), who was forced to miss the race due to injury. Colyn finished eighth in Canada West and 19th overall in 2016. Last year, the Spartans won the Canada West championship and finished second overall.
