PRINCE GEORGE, British Columbia - The No. 1 Trinity Western Spartans finished the weekend in Prince George with a 4-1 win. The victory gives TWU a sweep of the UNBC Timberwolves in their two game weekend matchup. The Spartans improve to 7-0-1 on the season while the Timberwolves drop to 0-8-2 after Sunday's game.

"It is a good corporate win and overall I'm quite pleased with the result. Credit to UNBC they made the game tricky when they scored to equalize. Our midfield was excellent in the first half in their ability to possess and control the ball, but we just got a sloppy and casual which resulted in their goal," commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "At half time we challenged them to play with more urgency, which I'm pleased that they did, but we are going to need to be better."

The Spartans dominated the play over the 90 minutes as they finished the afternoon outshooting the Timberwolves 30-7. Forward Kristen Gommeringer (Calgary), who had 11 shots, led the Spartan attack, while Sydney Hall finished with three shots for the Timberwolves.

"Gommeringer continues to show why she is so good. Her ability to create chances and generate opportunities for us is superb, but couple that with her work rate makes her awesome," added Roxburgh.

TWU's Christina Oliverio made two saves to record the win, while UNBC keeper Jordan Hall was busy making 14 saves in the loss.

The first goal came in the 19th minute. Gommeringer played a cross to Amy Gartke (Edmonton) low on the left side of the field, where the rookie defender crossed the ball into the box for Jenna Di Nunzio (North Delta, B.C.). A quick turn and shot put the ball into the back of the net and put the Spartans on the board 1-0.

The Timberwolves got the equalizer from striker Sidney Roy (Burnaby, B.C.) in the 44th minute. A through ball from Jessica Erickson (Prince George, B.C.) sent Roy up field. The third year striker carried the ball down the side line where she knocked the ball just under the crossbar, tying the game 1-1 just before the halftime whistle.

The Spartans controlled the second half netting three more goals before the final whistle. The first came in the 49th from Gommeringer, who sent a long ball across the box and into the net just inside of the far post. With a 2-1 lead the Spartans continued to put pressure on the Timberwolves which paid off in the 61st minute. Di Nunzio sent the ball to the feet of Isabella Di Trocchio (Burnaby, B.C.) who was able to find the back of the net from the top of the box.

The Spartans closed off the match with their final goal in the 88th minute. After a goal mouth scramble, on a Di Trocchio corner, defender Kristen Santema (Coquitlam, B.C.) got her foot on the ball to make the final 4-1 for the TWU.

Trinity Western continues their Canada West campaign Friday, October 10 and Saturday, October 11 when they host the University of Victoria Vikes and the UBC Thunderbirds. Match time at Rogers Field at TWU is set for 5 p.m.
