SPARTANS OPEN PRESEASON WITH THREE-SET WIN OVER QUEEN’S

LANGLEY, British Columbia – Elly Wendel (Caronport, Sask.) had a match-high 13 kills to lead Trinity Western to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-17) win over Queen's in the Spartans opening match of the Queen's Invitational Friday.

Middle Katie Devaney (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) had an errorless nine kills, while setter Nikki Cornwall (Coquitlam, B.C.) distributed 28 assists in TWU's first contest of the preseason.

With TWU up 12-9 in the first set the Spartans tallied five straight points to set the stage for a tidy nine-point win.

In the second set, Queen's and TWU went back and forth early before the Gaels held a slight edge 15-13 after a Danielle Corrigan kill. However, the Spartans rallied, taking seven of the next nine points before holding on to take the set 25-21.

The Spartans opened up a big lead early in the final set, going ahead 16-8 at the technical timeout. They pushed through a late Gaels charge to take the set 25-17.

TWU hit .429 as a team while Queen's hit just .171.
