BRANDON, Manitoba – After splitting the first two sets the Trinity Western Spartans took the final two games on their way to a 3-1 victory over the Brandon Bobcats Friday night at the Health and Leisure Centre in Brandon, Manitoba. The 25-22, 20-25, 25-15, 25-19 win improves TWU to 2-3, while the loss drops BU to 5-2.  

Katelyn Devaney with 15 kills at .591 efficiency and seven blocks, and Hilary Howe with 11 kills led the Spartans attack, while Nikala Majewski, Rayvn Wiebe, and Michelle Egger with nine kills each paced the Bobcats.  Danielle Larocque led Brandon with seven blocks.  

TWU's Brie O'Reilly finished the night with 40 set assists while BU's Mary Thomson finished the night with 31 assists.

After taking the first set, and dropping the second, TWU's offence and defence took over the match. The Spartans hit an impressive 35 per cent (11-4-20) to the Bobcats -.077 (8-10-26) in the third set, before closing out the match with 29.4 per cent (16-6-34) to 9.4 per cent (10-7-32) in the fourth set. While TWU's block finished with an impressive 20 total blocks to BU's eight.

  • Devaney's 15 kills were a career high, Devaney previous career-high for kills was 14, which she has earned twice – Jan. 15, 2016 against Calgary and earlier this year, Oct. 20, against Saskatchewan.
  • The last time the two teams met in Brandon was at the 2016 U SPORTS national quarter final, which TWU won 3-1.
  • The 20 blocks on the night tie for third highest in team history - 25 at Regina, Jan. 9, 2015, 21 at Manitoba Nov. 30, 2013, and 20 vs Regina Nov. 23, 2013.
  • Avery Heppell's 12 blocks was one off of school record held by Katie Devaney - 13, vs Alberta Nov. 9, 2013.


The Spartans and Bobcats will match up again Saturday evening in Brandon. TWU's next home match up is next weekend when they host the Mount Royal Cougars.
