LANGLEY, British Columbia – Trinity Western's women's cross country team is aiming to make history this year, as the Spartans have its sights set on winning a fourth straight Canada West championship, while also taking a run at knocking off 11-time defending USports champion Guelph when they compete in the national championships Saturday in Quebec City on the Plains of Abraham.
RACE TIME: 10 a.m. (PT)
The Spartans enter this year's championships as the three-time defending Canada West champions and winners of last year's USports silver medal. This year, TWU has a shot to do one better and capture an historic first ever national cross country title for the Spartans. TWU will also be seeking a fifth consecutive Canada West individual title.
On the heels of impressive seasons, the Spartans will be led by the duo of fourth-year Regan Yee (South Hazelton, B.C.) and fifth-year Lisa Brooking (Orillia, Ont.). Yee finished in the top two in all three of her races this year and won both the University of Washington Sundodger Open and the Western Washington University Classic before finishing second at the BC Championships. Meanwhile, Brooking has come into fine form in recent weeks and proved as such by beating Yee and winning the provincial championships.
After TWU's leading duo, the Spartans will rely on the likes of Mirelle Martens (Grande Prairie, Alta.), Joanna Williams (Campbell River, B.C.), Meg Harradine (Langley), Hannah Ryan (Seven Sisters Falls, Man.) and Mikaela Smart (Maple Ridge, B.C.).
Of their returning contingent, three of the Spartans – Brooking, Yee and Martens – were in the top 11 at last year's national championships and there's no reason to believe they can't better those results this year. After that, TWU will look to its depth, which is led by Williams, to help make a push for the national title.
