LANGLEY, British Columbia– Trinity Western’s Oke Okumo (Calgary, Alta.) is the Spartan Male Athlete of the Week after winning his first-ever Canada West gold medal by winning the long jump and helping lead the Spartans to a sixth-place finish at the Canada West championships at the Universiade Pavilion in Edmonton, Alta.
 
The third-year computer science student finished first with a jump of 7.26 meters.  The gold medal sees Okumo improve on the long jump silver medal he won at last year's Canada West Championships. Okumo now has three conference medals, having nabbed a bronze medal in the triple jump in 2022. Okumo also finished ninth in the triple jump with a jump of 13.08 meters, and 14^th in the high jump with a jump of 1.77 meters.
 
Okumo and the rest of the Spartans will finish off the 2024 track and field season March 7-9 at the U SPORTS championship in Winnipeg, Man.

As official members of U SPORTS, the Spartans currently compete in 13 sports in the Canada West conference, including women's and men's soccer, volleyball, basketball, hockey, cross country and track & field, as well as women's rugby sevens. TWU also competes as an independent team in men's rugby and women's and men's disc golf. Since TWU entered U SPORTS in 1999, the Spartans have won 14 U SPORTS team championships and 33 Canada West team championships.
