SALEM, Oregon – The Trinity Western University women's soccer team got their first win of 2015 with a solid 4-1 win over the Corbin College Warriors Saturday afternoon in Salem, Oregon. The win evens TWU's preseason record at 1-1.
"It was a great opportunity for some of our youngsters to get large minutes and good experience," commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "But now we have a big test tomorrow against Oregon State."
TWU second year forward Danae Derksen (Delta, B.C.) scored twice, while Lauren Ehrhardt (Burnaby, B.C.) and Leanne Verhoeff (Calgary) each scored once to pace the Spartans.
Derksen opened the scoring, with Ehrhardt following up to give TWU an early 2-0 lead.
The Warriors got their lone goal off of a goal mouth scramble to cut the lead in half, 2-1.
But in the final 30 minutes TWU played better as Leanne Verhoeff tucked in a rebound off of a Casandra Silveri (Delta, B.C.) free kick off of the cross bar to make it 3-1. Doerksen finished off the scoring with her second goal in the final 20 seconds of the game.
Second year keeper Rachel Sydor played the full 90 minutes and earned the win for the Spartans.
TWU will now travel to Corvallis, Oregon to take on the Oregon State University Beavers Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
The Spartans open up Canada West play on Friday and Saturday September 11-12 when they will host the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia at Rogers Field.
