PORTLAND, Oregon – The Trinity Western University Spartans tied the Concordia University Cavaliers 3-3 Friday evening in preseason soccer action at Tuominen Yard in Portland, Oregon.
"The tie was a fare result of a highly entertaining preseason match and I'm extremely pleased with our second half," commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "We had some great chances in the second half and in the last 20 minutes we battled hard and generated two or three good opportunities and our persistence was rewarded with a shot being blocked by a hand."
TWU fifth year forward Alessandra Oliverio (Calgary) scored in the 90th minute on a penalty kick as the Spartans overcame a 2-0 half time deficit to tie the Cavaliers.
Concordia used first half goals from Alicia Alarcon in the 10th minute and Emily Ponce in the 44th minute to take a 2-0 lead after the first 45 minutes.
The Spartans Nicole Bolder scored in the 67th minute to make it a one goal deficit until TWU forward Brooklyn Tidder tied the match in the 71st minute.
Concordia's Ariel Kanable scored on a penalty kick to put the Cavaliers up 3-2 heading into the final minutes of play.
TWU's fourth year Christina Oliverio (Calgary) and second year Rachel Sydor (Tsawwassen, B.C.) split the goal keeping duties for the Spartans. Olivia Brock 52 minutes, Nicole Franklin nine minutes and Taylor Cook 29 minutes split the keeping duties for the Cavaliers.
Next up for the Spartans is the University of Washington Huskies on Sunday August 30.at 11 a.m.
The Spartans open up Canada West play on Friday and Saturday September 11-12 when they will host the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia at Rogers Field. Both matches will be broadcasted live on Canadawest.TV.
