SEATTLE – The Trinity Western University women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to NCAA Div. I University of Washington Sunday afternoon at Husky Soccer Field in Seattle.
The Huskies got two first half goals from first year duo Pascale Dumesnil and Kelcie Hedge.
"A 2-0 loss is respectable against a top Div. I opponent. Our back four held well and their shape was good. And Ally Williamson was able to make some great saves," commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "Very pleased with the kids in the back line and with our midfield shape."
"They're a quality opponent," UW head coach Lesle Gallimore. "They are really well coached and they have some really quality players. They come out hard but also sit down and make you break down their defense. It's always nice to get a win, and I was pleased with how we played."
Hedge led a Washington attack that came out firing, as the freshman forward took the Huskies' first two shots. In the sixth minute, Hedge took a pass from junior defender Havana McElvaine in the box and headed it past Trinity Western keeper Ally Williamson to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
In the 29th minute, midfielder Amanda Perez found Dumesnil open in the box in front of the keeper, and her shot went into the left corner of the net to give the Huskies a 2-0 advantage that would stand for the final tally.
The Huskies outshot the Spartans 12-3 and finished with eight corner kicks to two for the Spartans.
Fourth year keeper Ally Williamson (Langley, B.C.) made three saves for the Spartans, while Sarah Shimer took the shutout win for the Huskies.
Trinity Western finished their exhibition schedule with a 1-2-3 record, all against schools in the Pacific Northwest.
Next up for Washington is the annual Husky Nike Invitational, Sept. 4 and 6. This year's field includes Illinois and Michigan, as well as perennial visitor Portland.
The Spartans open up Canada West play on Friday and Saturday September 11-12 when they will host the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia at Rogers Field. Both matches will be broadcasted live on Canadawest.TV.
Match Notes: This is the second time that the Spartans have played the Huskies in Seattle. "The University of Washington did a great job of hosting us as they always do," said Roxburgh… TWU lost last season by an identical 2-0 score…
