SEATTLE – The Trinity Western Spartans tied the NCAA Div. I University of Washington Huskies 0-0 in a cross-border friendly Sunday afternoon at Husky Soccer Stadium in Seattle.
"Tremendously encouraged by the effort put forth by our players. We played a very good athletic team and got to go against some of the strength and physicality that Pac 12 teams have. I thought we handled it well and were able to create some quality chances," commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "I think Washington was able to use the match as a chance to play some of their younger players. So it was a really good exercise for both teams. Overall it was a really good preseason match and we are happy that we were able to give a good account of ourselves."
TWU fifth year keeper Ally Williamson (Langley, B.C.) made three saves, while Washington's Kaylyn Smith made six saves over the full ninety minute scoreless draw.
The Spartans third year forward Seina Kashima (Burnaby, B.C.) had the best opportunity for TWU in the 44th minute of the opening frame. The Huskies Kaylyn Smith made the save, which went off the post and out of danger, as the half ended with the two squads tied 0-0.
Washington's Sam Kokoska came close to breaking the tie in the 76th minute, when her shot hit the TWU goal post.
The Spartans open up Canada West conference play on Friday, September 2 in Abbotsford, B.C. against the Fraser Valley Cascades. TWU's Canada West home opener is on Friday, September 16 when they will host the Victoria Vikes.
