Box Score SASKATOON – Trinity Western University's Danae Derksen (Delta, B.C.) tallied two goals to lead the Spartans to a 4-0 victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday afternoon on Field 7 in Saskatoon's PotashCorp Park.
The third-year forward scored in the 62nd and 86th minute. Derksen capitalized on a steal in front of the Huskies net beating keeper Kyleigh Vause in the bottom corner for her first goal. Her second goal sailed into the top corner sealing the victory.
With the win the No. 4 ranked Spartans move to 2-0, while the Huskies open the 2016 Canada West women's soccer season 0-1.
"We were a little sluggish to start and credit to Saskatchewan they made it very difficult for us in the early part of the match. After we got our first goal we all settled down, but prior to that I thought we were second best and I'm disappointed that we did not start the game with the type of energy that we should have," commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "We got significantly better in the second half and began to move the ball and stretch them out. It was a good corporate win for us, but we can play better."
Trinity Western's second year midfielder Rachel Hutchinson (Cloverdale, B.C.) opened the scoring in the 15th minute when she sent a ball from third year forward Siena Kashima (Burnaby, B.C.) into an open Huskie net. The Spartans extended the lead in the 45th minute when third year midfielder Kathleen Chin (Calgary) chipped a ball over Vause and into the top of the net from outside the 20-yard box.
Spartan fifth year keeper Ally Williamson (Langley, B.C.) and the Huskies Vause each made one save in the match. Trinity Western tallied eight shots in the game, while Saskatchewan recorded six.
The Huskies remain at home to host the Fraser Valley Cascades Sunday, while the Spartans travel to Regina to meet the Cougars. Live stats for the Spartans match are available on Gospartans.ca.
