ABBOTSFORD, British Columbia – The Trinity Western Spartans wrapped up a weekend sweep of the UFV Cascades, prevailing 3-0 at MRC Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon. With the win TWU improves to 10-1-1, while the loss drops UFV to 2-5-5.
Fifth year forward
Rachel Hutchinson (Cloverdale, B.C.) and fifth year midfielder
Jenaya Robertson (Delta, B.C.) set the pace for the nation's No. 2-ranked team, each notching a goal and an assist as TWU improved to 10-1-1 in Canada West play. Fourth year forward
Kathryn Harvey (Coquitlam, B.C.) also scored for the Spartans. While second year keeper
Hannah Miller (Langley, B.C.) made five saves for the clean sheet. UFV fell to 2-5-5.
The Cascades started brightly, making several dangerous forays in the first 15 minutes. Senior captain Brittney Zacharuk had the ball on her foot deep in the box, but she had her initial shot and the follow-up effort blocked by TWU defenders.
The Spartans gained traction as the half wore on, and Hutchinson opened the scoring in the 30th minute. She stepped in front of a Cascades pass and ventured forward before firing a shot past UFV keeper Andrea Perkovic into the bottom right corner.
Hutchinson set up the Spartans' second goal, sending in a corner in the 58th minute that Robertson headed home.
The Cascades' comeback hopes were dealt a blow in the 67th minute when a Yasmina Enneddam tackle was deemed worthy of a red card. Harvey rounded out the scoring in the 78th, collecting a Robertson cross and slotting a shot into the bottom right corner.

TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh
"Over all I'm really pleased. I thought we started really flat and UFV pressed us really hard and didn't let us play out. It is a smaller field, so there really weren't any spaces to find a rhythm but after 20 minutes we were able to break their press and our midfield won the ball higher up the park and we were a bit dangerous."
"Our opening goal probably settled our nerves a little bit. As cross town rivals is never easy to win when you play twice in three days."
"Overall we had some really good performances. Our back line continues to do well. It is nice to get the shutout for Hannah. Credit to Nicole Bolder (fourth year midfielder, Calgary), she made a real difference in the second half with her play. And Kat Harvey was a bit of an unsung hero and our midfield played well after the first 20 minutes"
On Rachel Hutchinson and Jenaya Robertson
"Rachel has proved time and time again that she's a threat that can run at players and find spaces in between. I don't know what else I can say about Jenaya . . . she does everything. This year she's on the stat sheet – she's scoring goals, having assists. But she battles, she wins headers at crucial times. People will remember her header goal, but what about two or three headed clearances when we're under pressure?"
