SPARTANS TAKE PACIFIC DIVISION TITLE WITH WIN

LANGLEY, B.C. – The No. 2 ranked Trinity Western Spartans concluded its Canada West Regular season in fine fashion, defeating the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack 4-0 at Chase Office Field to secure top spot in the Canada West Pacific Division.

Jenaya Robertson (Delta, B.C.) scored two goals for the Spartans to earn a Canada West leading 14th goal of the season. With the tallies, Robertson set the Spartans single-season goal-scoring record, passing Spatan alum Krista Gommeringer, who had 13 goals in 2012.

Gabi Short (Calgary) and Rachel Hutchinson (Cloverdale, B.C.) also scored for the Spartans, as TWU concluded the Canada West regular season with a 12-1-1 record. The Wolfpack meanwhile finish the season with a record of 2-8-4.

Both Robertson and Hutchinson finish the season with 19 points, good for third all-time in Trinity Western women's soccer history. They trail Gommeringer's 22 pts (2012) and Seina Kashima's 20 (2018).

With her assist, Hutchinson finishes with 11 assists on the season, tying for second all time in CW in a single season. She passes TWU alum Alicia Tesan, who had 10 in 2012. She trails CW leader and TWU alum Seina Kashima, who had 13 last season.

TWU opened the scoring in the 24th minute, when Spartans midfielder Short carried the ball down the right side and barrelled past a challenging Wolfpack goalkeeper Young, firing home the first goal of the game into the empty net.

That would do it for the first half as the Spartans held an 11-1 advantage in shots through the first 45 minutes.

TWU extended its lead to two in the second half, as captain Robertson headed a Hutchinson cross from the box in the 57th minute to make it 2-0 in favour of TWU.

Just six minutes later Wolfpack goalkeeper Marissa Young made a spectacular diving stop, sprawling to her left and denying Robertson of her second of the game to keep the game within two goals.

Two minutes after Young's stop, Robertson got her second goal of the match. Standing alone in the middle of the box and firing home her Canada West leading 14th goal of the season.

In the 87th minute Hutchinson extended the Spartans lead to four, taking a pass in the box and drilling it to the right side of the net.

Spartans keeper Ella Sutton (Port Moody, B.C.) made one save to earn the clean sheet, while Young made five saves in the loss.

QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh
"I didn't think we played particularly well in the first half, we seemed hesitant and tentative which probably came as a result of the emotions dealing with seniors night and a couple changes to our lineup. We picked it up towards the end of the first half, and the goal settled us down after a great ball from Harvey and intelligent finish from Gabi.

"That game could have been tricky at 1-0, we asked our team to press on and maybe win the ball higher up the field. Jenaya did that for us in midfield who was excellent, doing what she's done well all season in being clinical with her finishing, so I'm glad she was rewarded for her hard work. She had a great header of a great ball from Rachel off a corner. Overall the energy was good, really pleased that Emily Killam had some good minutes and the seniors all got to play.

On the graduating seniors
"This is a special seniors group, not just on the field but also bringing this team together off it. All of their attitudes have been really good as well. Brooklyn has been a stalwart at the back, Nicole got some good minutes this weekend and showed that she can be a helpful contributor. Rachel got up and down the line and generated offence which she does so well. Carly also showed well with her minutes today, and of course Jenaya wraps up a great regular season career, achieving a regular season scoring record which is just a testament to the hard work the seniors have put in."

NOTABLE
  • With the win, the Spartans equaled their record for most points in a season with 37 (2011).
  • The Spartans four goals also set a new season high for goals in a season with 48, smashing the previous record of 44 (2018, 2012). The Spartans also pass Calgary and Victoria (47) for second most all-time in Canada West history, sitting behind UBC's record of 55 (2010).
  • Lindsey Pegios (Surrey, B.C.) recorded her first career Canada West point with an assist on Hutchinson's goal in the 87th minute.
  • TWU finished the game holding a 25-2 edge in total shots and 9-2 edge in shots on goal.
