SPARTANS COMPETE ON DAY 2 OF ALBERTA 7S TOURNAMENT

EDMONTON – Trinity Western's women's rugby team played in the Alberta 7s Tournament for the second straight day with a split squad, with the Spartans winning one game from four outings Sunday at the Foote Field Dome.

TWU 'B' nabbed the win for the Spartans, beating Regina 25-20 with a try at the death. Meanwhile, TWU 'A' dropped games against Alberta (25-10) and Lethbridge (35-0), with TWU 'B' falling to Calgary 25-0.

Danika Dool (Chilliwack, B.C.) and Jenna de Greef (Victoria) scored for the TWU 'A' side, while the TWU 'B' team got two tries from Matisan Kelly (Lillooet, B.C.) and one each from AJ Pryce (Kamloops, B.C.), Michelle Veerman (White Rock, B.C.) and Serenity Ukponrefe (Langley, B.C.).

The Spartans won twice over eight games in two days with a split-squad set-up.

AS IT HAPPENED
TWU 'B' opened the day, falling to Calgary 25-0 in a hard-fought 14-minute battle.

Against Alberta, TWU 'A' got tries from Dool and de Greef, but it wasn't quite enough in a 15-point loss against the Pandas.

In the Spartans lone win of the day, Kelly scored twice, while Pryce, Veerman and Ukponrefe dotted down once each as TWU 'B' battled back late against Regina for a thrilling 25-20 victory.

In the final game of the day, TWU 'A' lost 35-0 against a tidy Lethbridge side.

QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Andrew Evans
"It was a great experience, but, after picking up a few injuries, playing four matches for the second day in a row with a short bench caught up to us a bit. Our 'A' team scored a brilliant try to start against Alberta and then we scored again late, but after that, the team hit a bit of a wall. Against Lethbridge, the Pronghorns played great offloading sevens and capitalized on our mistakes.

"A highlight of the day was our 'B' team coming from behind to beat a well-coached Regina side."
