SPARTANS FINISH WEEKEND AT CANADA WEST 7S

EDMONTON – Trinity Western's women's sevens team finished Edmonton's Canada West 7s Series in Edmonton on Sunday to place sixth.

TWU fell to Lethbride and UBC to cap off the series as their scheduled fifth vs. sixth game was cancelled due to TWU not being able to field enough players.

Issy Scholtens (Langley, B.C.) picked up right were she left Saturday's games, scoring a try against Lethbridge before converting on her own play. Vlada Shevchenko (Delta, B.C.) capped off TWU's final game of the day by scoring in the final minutes of the match.

The Canada West Rugby 7s tournament will now head to Victoria, as the Vikes host Tournament #2 February 12th and 13th at Wallace Field. UBC will host the final tournament February 25th and 26th in Vancouver.

QUOTABLE
Andy Evans – TWU Head Coach
"Issy Scholtens converted her own try after a great linebreak break down the middle of the pitch and outran two Lethbridge players.

"Vlada Shevchenko was able to score a try off the side of a five meter ruck after she had a 30 meter linebreak two phases earlier.

"Overall, our Spartans should be very proud of their performance as a team this weekend. With injuries and players unavailable this weekend, everyone stepped up. Yesterday, on day one, Serenity Ukponrefe had a great game vs uvic but unfortunately was ruled out of the rest of the tournament with a knee injury during another good performance against U of Alberta.

"I thought Vlada Shevchenko was outstanding at hooker and her desire and attention to the game plan was a great example of Spartan rugby. It is great to see players like Vlada to be rewarded with a try to finish our day.

"We have a couple weeks to get everyone healthy and work on playing some expansive, dynamic sevens. We are grateful to University of Alberta for hosting and to get some much needed experience in our squad."
