SPARTANS FALL TO OTTAWA IN NATIONAL QUARTER-FINAL

LAVAL, Que. – Trinity Western's run in the 2022 U SPORTS Championship was cut short on Thursday at Telus Stadium, falling 1-0 to OUA Champion Ottawa.

A 78th minute marker from Ottawa forward Cassandra Provost was enough to win a defensive tilt between the two sides.

The game only saw a total of four shots find the target, with the Spartans outshooting Ottawa 3-1. The Gee-Gees were able to accumulate more shots taken in total, tallying 10 compared to TWU's eight.

TWU will now take on Calgary in Friday's consolation semi-final at 11:00 a.m. ET.

AS IT HAPPENED
A slow first half was highlighted by a front-of-net scramble in front of Ottawa's net. The Spartans couldn't put the chance home in what was an even half.

A staunch Gee-Gees back-line continued to defend throughout the remainder of the match as Provost eventually broke through for the game-winning goal. The Spartans couldn't recover, ending the match at a 1-0 line for the Gee-Gees.

QUOTABLE
Graham Roxburgh – TWU Head Coach
"I thought it was two good teams who both have their strengths today. I thought we dealt with their forwards really well, and defended really well. They generated one or two chances more than us in the first half, but I thought we looked comfortable in the second half. They have one or two players who can get on the break, but I thought the field tilted in our favour. It was always going to come down to who could bury their chances, and unfortunate circumstances led to them scoring. On a different day maybe we're celebrating a 1-0 win instead of being disappointed.

"I don't think any of us imagined exiting this early, so we'll regroup tonight, come back tomorrow with a fresh mindset, and give chances who need an opportunity to play and grow through these experiences. I'm gutted for my players, I think they did well enough to not deserve losing.

"Olivia Kranjcec, Jessica Vance, and our whole back-line were great. They have the Player of the Year up front, and I didn't think she did a whole lot in the game besides converting on a half chance. I thought Sierra [Halldorson] was really bold in being a leader in the midfield, Holland [Stiel] came on and gave us good minutes, we just didn't have that critical touch to finish. We got half-chances, and I think we were a bit unlucky not to score. Everybody put a shift in, and they competed right to the end. We played against a mature team and we're a bit younger, but I'm disappointed that we let one get away today."

NOTABLE
  • Tilly James (Vancouver) was named TWU's player of the game.
