SPARTANS ROLL TO WIN WITH STRONG SECOND HALF

VANCOUVER – Trinity Western moved to 2-0 in its BC Rugby Division 2 campaign, beating Scribes RFC 20-3 Saturday afternoon at Trout Lake Park.

With the score tied 3-3 at halftime, the Spartans turned up the pressure over the final 40 minutes, outscoring Scribes 17-0 to pick up the win in Vancouver.

All told Ethan Bernardin (Langley, B.C.) and James Aalhus (Langley) each dotted down for the Spartans, while Keegan Marengo (Johannesburg, South Africa) tallied 10 points from the tee, kicking two penalties and two conversions.

AS IT HAPPENED
After the teams traded penalties in the first half, Marengo sparked the second half scoring with his second  penalty of the day, slotting it through in the 52nd minute. From there, the game remained a three-point contest until Bernardin broke through on a near end-to-end run that saw him touch down for a try in the 70th minute.

With a 13-3 edge, the Spartans put the game to bed in the final seconds when Aalhus found the try line in the 80th minute.

QUOTABLE
TWU Assistant Coach Stuart Crowley
"We played really tenacious defence today. Holding Scribes to just three points and keeping them off the scoreboard throughout the entire second half was really good to see. Offensively, we took advantage of the opportunities when they happened and that was really the difference this afternoon."

NOTABLE
•    The win is TWU's second in a row in Division 2, having knocked off Axemen Rugby Club 34-17 on Feb. 5.
•    TWU has now earned three straight wins against local club sides, dating back to a 34-13 win over Abbotsford RFC on Nov. 25.
•    Saturday's result came just two days after the Spartans put together a strong showing in a 24-0 loss against highly-ranked Central Washington University.

NEXT UP
The Spartans will now prepare to play Simon Fraser RFC Saturday at 1 p.m. at Thomas Haney Athletic Park.
