VICTORIA –
Matisan Kelly (Lilloet, B.C.) led Trinity Western in the first day of Victoria's Canada West 7s Series at Wallace Field on Saturday, scoring two tries on the day.
One of Kelly's tries stood as the first in TWU's highlight of the day – which was defeating Alberta 19-17. The victory stands as TWU's first against a program with a 15s team.
Kelly dotted down early in the match, converting on her own score to put TWU up 7-0. The Pandas answered back with a converted try of their own in their own to tie it up.
Jenna de Greeff (Victoria) wrapped the first half up with an unconverted try, handing the Spartans a 12-7 lead heading into the second.
Two failed conversions by Alberta stood as the difference in the match, as a
Danika Dool (Chilliwack, B.C.) was converted by TWU to seal the victory.
The Spartans fell to UBC (37-0) and Victoria (29-14) in their two other matches, going 1-2 on the day.

Teams are awarded 15 points for a tournament win, 12 points for finishing 2nd, 10 points for finishing third, 8 points for finishing fourth, 6 points for finishing fifth, 4 points for finishing sixth, 2 points for finishing seventh, and 1 point for finishing eighth.
The University of Alberta (January 20/21) Victoria (February 11/12) and British Columbia (March 4/5) will host the three Rugby 7s tournaments in 2023.
