LANGLEY, British Columbia – Trinity Western fourth-year midfielder
Sierra Halldorson (Winnipeg, MB) scored on a penalty kick in extra time to allow the Spartans to salvage a 1-1 draw with the Fraser Valley Cascades Friday evening at Chase Office Field in Langley, BC. The draw moves both the Spartans and the Cascades to 1-1-1 on the season.
TWU fifth-year keeper Hanna Miller (Langley, B.C.) faced only one shot in the match, while UFV keeper Kareena Sahota made nine saves on the night.
AS IT HAPPENED
The Spartans had control of most of the opening half outshooting the Cascades 10-1. But UFV made the most of their lone shot on net in the opening 45 minutes. Cascade midfielder Halle McCambley dispossessed the Spartan defender and then from the right side of the box chipped the ball over TWU's Miller and into the far side of the net to give the UFV a 1-0 lead in the 40
th minute.
TWU again had the advantage in the second half but were unable to find the back of the net even with a 9-2 total shot advantage. Not until extra time did the Spartans find the mark. TWU second-year forward
Charis Wardrope (Maple Ridge, B.C.) made a hard charge into the left side of the UFV penalty area where she was fouled by UFV keeper Sahota. The Spartans Halldorson beat Sahota on the ensuing PK to tie the match at 1-1 in extra time.
QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh
"Disappointing and I hope we learn from it because while we had most of the territorial possession and we were coming in the end, our decision-making and lack of mental sharpness was what cost us."
