LANGLEY, British Columbia – Rookie forward
Laren Spiller (Surrey, B.C.) scored two more goals, while second-year forward
Sophie Crowther (New Westminster, B.C.) added a goal and an assist to lead the No. 7 Trinity Western Spartans to a solid 3-0 win over the UBC Okanagan Heat Friday night at Chase Office Field in Langley, B.C. The win improves the Spartans to 6-1-3, while the loss drops the Heat to 5-3-2.
TWU fifth-year keeper
Hannah Miller (Langley, B.C.) made two saves to record the win, while UBC Okanagan's Talia Gagnon made four saves in the loss.
AS IT HAPPENED
The contest was evenly played for much of the opening half. Heat forward Stefanie Young had a number of quality chances in the Spartan penalty area, including two headers off of corner kicks, to start the match. But Miller was able to keep the Canada West goal-scoring leader from finding the back of the net and keep the game tied at 0-0.
Spiller opened the scoring with her fourth of the season in the 32
nd minute. TWU second-year forward
Sophie Crowther took the ball up the right side and into the Heat penalty area where she found fourth-year forward
Charity Field (Burnaby, B.C.) at the top of the box. Field took a hard shot that UBC Okanagan's Gagnon was able to stop, but she was unable to hold onto the rebound. Spiller crashed the six and put the loose ball under the Heat's keeper to put TWU up 1-0.
Spiller got her second of the match, and fifth of the season, in extra time in the first half. Crowther beat the outside left back and sent a square ball to a waiting Spiller at the top of the UBC-O penalty area. Spiller sent a hard shot to the centre of the net. Gagnon was able to get a piece of the ball but was unable to stop the ball from crossing the goal line as TWU went up 2-0 at the half.
Crowther got her own in the 55
th minute to put TWU up 3-0. The TWU forward intercepted a pass from the UBC Okanagan keeper to her defender outside the top of the penalty area. Crowther took a step and put the ball into the wide-open Heat net.
In the 63
rd minute, UBC Okanagan again looked to get on the board with Young getting open in the Spartans' penalty area. But her shot from the top left corner of the box was controlled by Miller to keep the Heat off of the scoresheet.
QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh
"It was a good win. In the end, it probably seemed a little bit more comfortable than what it was. But credit to our girls for tightening things up in the second half and just working a little smarter on our press."
"Super pleased with our finishes. Sometimes you have to have beautiful goals and other times you have to score scrappy goals. We talked about if there was a mistake or a spill can we be first to a loose ball in the box and Laren was."
"We will take it, but we know that we started sluggishly and we know that we have to be a little bit sharper and dictate the pace of a game rather than allow our opponents to do that."
On standout players
"I thought Dani Cooper (second-year defender, Surrey, B.C.) was excellent early on in the game to defend us and stop their momentum of playing forward."
"It was really nice to see
Sarah Bazille. It was a special moment for her to come on and be rewarded for some incredibly hard work and perseverance that she has put in."
