LANGLEY, British Columbia – This Week in Sparta has six teams in action. Women's soccer continues their quest for a Canada West and U SPORTS championship at the Canada West Final Four, men's hockey is at home with games in Langley and Aldergrove, women's and men's basketball have a home-and-home conference opening series, while women's hockey and women's volleyball are on the road.

MEN'S HOCKEY

NOTABLE 
  • The Spartans are currently in fourth spot in the West division at 0-6, while the Cougars are in fifth place in the East division at 1-5.
  • Last weekend on the road TWU dropped two games to the Calgary Dinos, 6-3, and 5-1, at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary, Alta.
  • Last the Regina Cougars split with the Manitoba Bisons, losing 6-3, and winning 6-4, in Winnipeg, Man.
  • TWU is currently 0-8 lifetime against Regina. In their last two games at home against the Cougars the Spartans lost 4-2, and 6-2.
  • In their last matchup last season TWU lost 4-1 to Regina in Regina, Sask.

  • The Spartans are ranked 10 in the Canada West preseason coaches' poll, while the UBC Thunderbirds are ranked No. 2, and the Victoria Vikes are ranked No. 7.
  • The Spartans finished their preseason at 3-2, the Thunderbirds finished at 6-1, while Victoria finished at 1-5.
  • The Spartans are currently 19-47 lifetime against the Vikes. TWU was 0-2 last season in conference play against Victoria losing 78-74, and 64-53 at home.
  • TWU's last win against Victoria was 83-66 in the Canada West playoffs February 17, 2023. The Spartans last home win against the Vikes was 68-62 on November 13, 2021.
  • Trinity Western is currently 7-54 lifetime against UBC. The Spartans were 0-2 last season losing 69-64, and 66-60 in Vancouver, B.C.
  • TWU's last win against UBC was in the 2021-22 season, when the Spartans went 3-0 with their last win December 4, 21 68-61 in Vancouver, B.C. The Spartans last win at home against the Thunderbirds was 71-67, on January 11, 2003.

NOTABLE 
  • TWU (8-4-2) opens the Canada West Final Four with a match up with the UBC Thunderbirds (14-0).
  • The other semi-final features the Victoria Vikes (7-2-5) and the Calgary Dinos (11-2-1).
  • The Spartans will be looking for their 11th Canada West championship this year.
  • Last weekend on the road in Edmonton, Alta. TWU defeated the MacEwan Griffins 2-1 to advance to their 22 Canada West Final four, in the last 23 year.
  • The last time TWU did not qualify for the Canada West Final Four was 2003. TWU finished fourth in the conference, but Lethbridge was host, so they took the fourth spot in the championship.
  • The Spartans have won nine total Canada West Championships and have won four of the last six championships. 
  • The Thunderbirds defeated the Alberta Pandas 7-0 in their quarter final match.
  • On the other side of the draw Calgary defeated UBC Okanagan 1-0, and Victoria defeated Saskatchewan 1-0 to advance. 
  • The Spartans are currently 19-30-12 lifetime against the Thunderbirds. 
  • TWU lost both matches to UBC this season, losing 4-0 on the road in Vancouver and 2-0 at home at Chase Office Field.
  • TWU is the defending Canada West champions, 1-0 6-5PK over UBC, and U SPORTS silver medalist, 0-1 OT vs UBC.
  • The top three teams from Canada West will qualify for the U SPORTS championship November 7-10 at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
  • TWU is 30-20-7 lifetime against Victoria. The Spartans lost 1-0 to the Vikes on September 29 and tied 1-1 on September 13 at home. TWU defeated Victoria 2-0 in last season's Canada West semi-final.
  • The Spartans are currently 19-7-7 against the Dinos, TWU did not play Calgary this season. Their last postseason meeting was 2023, when TWU defeated Calgary 2-1 (4-3 PK).

  • The Spartans are currently in fourth spot in the West division at 1-5, while the Cougars are in first place in the East division at 5-0-1.
  • Last weekend at home TWU split with the then No. 10 Calgary Dinos, winning 3-1, and losing 3-2 at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C.
  • Last the Regina Cougars swept the Manitoba Bisons, winning 3-2, and 2-0, in Winnipeg, Man.
  • TWU is currently 7-1 lifetime against Regina. In their last two games at home against the Cougars last season the Spartans won 2-0, and 5-0.
  • The Spartans only loss was 2-1 in Regina on November 19, 2021.

  • The No. 4 Spartans have a single match this week at the No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds.
  • Both teams are currently unbeaten at 4-0.  
  • Last weekend TWU defeated the Brandon Bobcats 3-0 on both nights in Langley, B.C.  
  • The Thunderbirds also had a weekend sweep over the Regina Cougars winning both nights 3-0 at War Memorial Gym.
  • In preseason play this season TWU defeated UBC twice 3-2, and 3-0. 
  • The Spartans are currently 32-57 lifetime against the Thunderbirds. 
  • In their previous conference meetings last season Trinity Western lost 3-1, and 3-2.
  • TWU's last conference win over UBC was 3-2, November 26, 2022. Their last win at War Memorial was 3-2 the previous night, November 25. 
  • The Spartans lost their first 29 matches against the Thunderbirds when they entered Canada West in 1999-2000. TWU is 12-4 since the 2019-20 season against UBC.
 About Spartan Athletics 
As official members of U SPORTS, the Spartans currently compete in 13 sports in the Canada West conference, including women's and men's soccer, volleyball, basketball, hockey, cross country, and track & field, as well as women's rugby sevens. TWU also competes as an independent team in men's rugby, as well as women's and men's disc golf. Since TWU entered U SPORTS in 1999, the Spartans have won 13 U SPORTS team championships and 32 Canada West team championships.
