LANGLEY, British Columbia - This Week in Sparta sees the Canada West home openers for the Spartans women's and men's soccer teams, with the men's rugby team hosting their second match of the season.

NOTABLE

  • The No. 3 (U SPORTS Top 10) TWU Spartans (2-0) have their home openers this weekend against the Victoria Vikes (2-1) and the Mount Royal Cougars (1-2). 
  • Last weekend TWU defeated TRU 2-1 in Kamloops, B.C. And UBC Okanagan 1-0 in Kelowna, B.C. 
  • Last week Victoria was at home where they lost to No. 1 UBC 5-0 and defeated UNBC 4-1.
  • The Spartans are currently 30-19-6 lifetime against the Vikes. In their last meeting TWU defeated Victoria 2-0 in the Canada West semi-final last November at UBC. Earlier that season in conference play the Spartans split with the Vikes, losing 1-0 at home, and winning 4-1 in Victoria, B.C.
  • TWU is currently 8-1-1 against Victoria in their last 10 match-ups.
  • Since 2014 the Spartans are 10-1-1 at Chase Office Field against the Vikes. 
  • Trinity Western is currently 6-0-1 lifetime against Mount Royal. Last season the Spartans earned four points off of the Cougars, tying 1-1 in Calgary, Alta. and winning 5-0 at home at Chase Office Field. 
  • Last week at home in Calgary, the Cougars defeated UNBC 4-0 and lost to No. 1 UBC 4-0.
  • The Spartans are 4-0 at lifetime at home against the Cougars. 
  • TWU is the defending Canada West champions and U SPORTS silver medalist.

NOTABLE

  • The Spartans (0-3-1) have their home opener this weekend against the Cougars (1-0-4) after starting the Canada West season on the road.
  • Last weekend the Spartans lost 1-0 to the No. 10 (US) Victoria Vikes in Victoria, B.C., and tied the No. 1 (US) UBC Thunderbirds 1-1 in Vancouver, B.C.
  • Last weekend the Cougars were on the road in Edmonton, Alta. MRU tied the MacEwan Griffins 1-1 on Saturday, and the No. 10 (US) Alberta Golden Bears 1-1 on Sunday.
  • The Spartans are 3-2-1 lifetime against the Cougars. 
  • Last season TWU lost 2-0 to MRU on the road in Calgary, Alta.
  • The last time the Spartans hosted the Cougars at Chase Office Field was in the Canada West quarter-finals in 2016, which TWU won 3-0. The Spartans are 2-0-1 lifetime at Chase Office Field against the Cougars. 
  • The Spartans are in the midst of playing eight of their first nine matches on the road. After Friday's match TWU's next home game is not until October 4-5 when they will host the UBC Okanagan Heat and the TRU WolfPack.

Saturday, September 14 vs Pacific Pride, Langley, B.C.

NOTABLE

  • TWU hosts the Pride in the second match of the season. 
  • Last week the Spartans lost 61-18 to the No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds.
  • Last week the Pride defeated Victoria 33-17 in Victoria, B.C.
  • The Spartans are 1-5 lifetime versus the Pride.
  • In their last meeting last season TWU lost 43-20 to the Pride.

As official members of U SPORTS, the Spartans currently compete in 13 sports in the Canada West conference, including women's and men's soccer, volleyball, basketball, hockey, cross country, and track & field, as well as women's rugby sevens. TWU also competes as an independent team in men's rugby, as well as women's and men's disc golf. Since TWU entered U SPORTS in 1999, the Spartans have won 13 U SPORTS team championships and 32 Canada West team championships.
