EDMONTON – Trinity Western won both of their Sunday matches, beating Calgary and Alberta, to earn an historic second place finish in the opening tournament of the Canada West Rugby 7s Series.
The Spartans finished with a 4-1 record in the round robin tournament to capture second overall, bettering their previous best-ever third-place result at the Vancouver stop in 2024.
On Sunday, the Spartan beat Calgary 31-14, which marked their most decisive win over the Dinos ever, having beat them only once previously, 15-10. The Spartans then capped their tournament with a 12-10 win over Alberta, which ultimately secured second place.
The Spartans were led by
Ava Van Santen, who had four tries in two matches Sunday, while
Hannah Hibbs,
Hailey Hibbs and Jenna De Greeff also scored for TWU on Day 2. De Greeff slotted three conversions and
Issy Scholtens hit one conversion.
Van Santen finished with a team-high five tries over the two-day tournament, while De Greeff scored four,
Danika Dool and
Hailey Hibbs had two each and
Kelsa Kempf and
Hannah Hibbs tallied one apiece.
On Saturday, TWU beat Victoria (12-5) and Lethbridge (31-7) before losing to tournament champions UBC (34-7).
TWU will now return to Langley looking to build off their best-ever performance when the Spartans host the second event on the Canada West Rugby 7s Series Feb. 7-8 at Willoughby Stadium at the Langley Events Centre.
