THIS WEEK IN SPARTA

LANGLEY, British Columbia – This Week In Sparta is a busy week with nine teams competing all across North America. The Spartans basketball teams are at home hosting UBC Okanagan, with women's hockey hosting Mount Royal and women's rugby in an exhibition tournament with Victoria. On the road are the men's and women's volleyball teams for a single header with UBC, the men's hockey on the road against Mount Royal, and the cross country teams at the NAIA championships.

  • The Spartans are currently 6-2 and in second spot in the Canada West Pacific Division. The Heat are 5-3 and in third spot.
  • Last week, the Spartans swept the Thompson Rivers WolfPack 64-37 and 67-44 in Kamloops, B.C.
  • The Heat swept the UNBC Timberwolves 72-48 and 61-40 at home in Kelowna, B.C.

  • TWU fifth-year centre Connor Platz (Langley, B.C.) currently has 196 career blocked shots and is one block behind the Canada West record of 197 held by former Manitoba Bison Myron Dean (09). Platz is currently 16 blocks away from the U SPORTS record of 212 held by York's Stefan Haynes (11).
  • Platz is currently second in U SPORTS in career blocks per game at 2.6, trailing Lakehead's Lock Lam's (20) 2.8 blocks per game.
  • This season, Platz is averaging 3.4 blocks per game, which is seventh in U SPORTS history for blocks per game in a season. In 2023-24, Platz averaged 3.5 blocks per game. Which was tied for the third most in U SPORTS history.
