LANGLEY, British Columbia – It's championship week for This Week in Sparta with the women's soccer team in Hamilton, Ont., for the U SPORTS women's soccer championships, and the cross country teams in Independence, Oregon, for the Cascade Conference Championships. At home this week are the men's and women's volleyball teams, while men's and women's basketball teams are on the road in Prince George, B.C.

  • The Spartans are currently 4-0 and tied with Alberta for top spot in Canada West. The Dinos sit at 2-2 and are in a tie for sixth spot in Canada West.
  • Last week, the Spartans swept the Winnipeg Wesmen, winning 3-2 and 3-0 in Winnipeg, Man.
  • The Dinos had a bye week last week, but before that, Calgary split with the Manitoba Bisons, losing 3-1 and winning 3-0 in Winnipeg, Man.
  • TWU is currently 38-42 lifetime against the Calgary Dinos. Last year in conference play, the Spartans split with the Dinos, winning 3-0 and losing 3-1 in Calgary on January 24 and 25.
  • Fourth-year outside Maryn Boldon (Okotoks, Alta.) was named Canada West BioSteel women's volleyball player of the week this past week after breaking the Spartans' record for kills in a match with her 26 on Friday night against the Winnipeg Wesmen.

  • The Spartans are currently 4-0 and tied with UBC for top spot in Canada West. The Dinos sit at 2-2 and are in a tie for seventh spot in Canada West.
  • Last week, the Spartans swept the Winnipeg Wesmen, winning 3-1 and 3-1 in Winnipeg, Man.
  • The Dinos had a bye week last week, but before that, Calgary was swept by the Manitoba Bisons, losing 3-0 on both nights in Winnipeg, Man.
  • TWU is currently 55-29 lifetime against the Calgary Dinos. Last year in conference play, the Spartans split with the Dinos, winning 3-2 and losing 3-0 in Calgary on January 24 and 25.
  • Fourth-year outside Kaden Schmidt (Mississauga, Ont.) was named Canada West BioSteel men's volleyball player of the week this past week after averaging 25.5 kills per game in the Spartans' weekend sweep of Winnipeg. His weekend-high 27 kills on Saturday equals the third-best total in a four-set match and puts him tied for the sixth-best performance overall in TWU history.

NOTABLE
  • As the Canada West silver medalist, the Trinity Western Spartans qualified for their 17th championship tournament, and their fifth straight. 
  • The No. 6 Spartans, who have five national titles, will begin the tournament with a quarter-final match-up against the No. 3 Toronto Varsity Blues (OUA champions). It will be the first time the Spartans have ever faced the Varsity Blues.
  • Also on the TWU side of the draw are the No. 2 Montreal Carabins (RSEQ champions) and the No. 7 McMaster Marauders (host).
  • On the other side of the draw are No. 5 Laval Rouge et Or and the No. 4 Cape Breton Capers, and the No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds and the No. 8 Guelph Griffins.
  • Trinity Western has appeared in 16 national tournaments and played in 10 national championship gold medal matches, winning five gold medals. 
  •  TWU has earned 11 medals at the U SPORTS championships, five gold, five silver, and one bronze, and are 31-15-1 in 47 matches. 
  • The Spartans' first appearance was in 2004, when they won the first U SPORTS banner in Trinity Western's history.

As official members of U SPORTS, the Spartans currently compete in 11 sports in the Canada West conference, including women's and men's soccer, volleyball, basketball, hockey, and track & field, as well as women's rugby sevens. TWU also competes as in the NAIA in track and field and cross country as an independent team in men's rugby and women's and men's disc golf.
