CLARKE WINS HEPTATHLON GOLD, SETS TWU RECORD AT CW CHAMPS

REGINA – Trinity Western second-year Dajean Clarke scored 5,008 points in the heptathlon to win gold at the Canada West Championships and break the Spartans heptathlon record. Clarke's podium-topping performance helped lift the Spartans men's team to a third-place finish at the conference meet Saturday at the City of Regina Fieldhouse.

Clarke's second day was highlighted by clearing 4.45m in pole vault, which gave him the necessary lead to see out the heptathlon victory. Clarke's record-setting performance saw him better the previous record of 4,997 points (Feb. 25, 2023), which was held by Brandon Gremaud, who also medalled Saturday, winning bronze with 4,782 points. With Clarke's win, TWU has now won six heptathlon gold medals in the last 10 years.

TWU's heptathlon success on Saturday was part of a four-medal day for TWU.

Rookie Yemane Mulugeta earned his second medal of the competition as he won bronze in the 1500m in 3:56.36 to go with the 3000m silver he won on Friday.

On the women's side, Erica Udoh won the Spartans first-ever medal in weight throw, capturing silver with a throw of 15.86m to help the Spartans to a sixth-place finish overall.

All told, the Spartans won 11 medals at the Canada West Championships, which equals TWU's 2022 medal haul as the best championship performance since 2017, when the Spartans men's team won the conference title and TWU captured a combined 17 medals.
