SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Lucy Haigh scored the lone goal for Trinity Western in a 3-1 preseason setback against defending Big West champion UC Santa Barbara (NCAA Division I) Saturday evening at Harder Stadium.
Playing their second NCAA Division I opponent in three days, the Spartans had three shots on target to the Gauchos seven in a hard-fought exhibition. Haigh scored on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute. TWU goalkeeper
Yasmine Pahal made four saves.
The Spartans are now 0-2 all-time against UCSB, having lost 2-0 in a preseason tilt last year (Aug. 12).
QUOTABLE
Graham Roxburgh, TWU Head Coach
"Tonight had some positive elements, but overall I am disappointed that we squandered a chance to really play. UCSB are quality, but our naivety showed too much at times. It was a good learning experience for our young group. We didn't take advantage of a good start and, as the game got stretched, we were guilty of poor possession and then started to make poor decisions. We saw some positive performances from
Sophie Crowther,
Clara Chudley and
Erin Stewart."
