LANGLEY, British Columbia – Canada West hockey returns this weekend as the Spartans host the Regina Cougars for their women's Canada West home opener, while the Spartans men's team travels to Regina for their Canada West season opener against the Cougars. Women's basketball opens its preseason at Mount Royal's tournament in Calgary, while men's rugby travels to Victoria for a Coastal Cup rematch.

NOTABLE
  • The Spartans begin Canada West conference play at home against Regina on Friday. TWU finished its exhibition schedule 0-2 after losing 2-1 on the road at UBC on September 26 and 5-2 at home to the Thunderbirds on October 3.
  • Kyra Anderson and Kara Yackel scored Saturday, with Ella Boon assisting on both goals. TWU led 2-1 in the second period before UBC scored four unanswered goals, including two into an empty net.
  • TWU was picked seventh and Regina eighth in the Canada West preseason coaches' poll released October 7. The Spartans enter the season after reaching the Canada West semifinals last winter.
  • Regina arrives with four consecutive exhibition wins. Last weekend, the Cougars swept Minot State at home, winning 3-1 October 2 and 5-1 October 3.

NOTABLE
  • TWU opens Canada West conference play on the road in Regina Friday after a perfect 6-0 exhibition schedule. The Spartans closed preseason with back-to-back home shutouts of NAIT, winning 1-0 October 2 and 5-0 October 3.
  • The six exhibition victories included a 4-3 shootout win over UBC, 7-3 and 6-1 wins over Victoria, a 5-1 win over Vancouver Island University and the two victories over NAIT. All six games were played at home.
  • Regina went 1-5 in exhibition play and enters the opener after four consecutive losses. Last weekend, the Cougars fell 3-2 to Saskatchewan on the road in Saskatoon and 4-1 at a neutral site at Big River First Nation.
  • The Spartans' Canada West home opener is October 16 against UBC at The Arenas at LEC in Langley, with the second game of that series October 17.
  • The Canada West preseason Coaches Poll will be released Thursday morning.

  • These are the Spartans' first games of the 2026-27 season. TWU opens with a neutral-site matchup against UNB before facing host Mount Royal.
  • Both TWU games will be streamed live on MRU's YouTube channel.
  • UNB swept its home Helen Campbell Tournament last weekend, defeating Guelph 113-48, Laval 67-61 and StFX 68-54 October 2–4.
  • Mount Royal won both games on its Ontario road trip, beating Waterloo 56-53 October 2 and York 60-57 October 4. The Cougars host UBC Thursday before playing TWU Friday.
  • The Spartans begin Canada West conference play October 29 on the road against UBC in Vancouver, then host Victoria October 31 at the Langley Events Centre.

NOTABLE
  • The Spartans are 0-3 in Coastal Cup play after falling 42-21 to UBC at home October 2. TWU outscored the Thunderbirds 21-14 in the second half after trailing 28-0 at halftime.
  • Jacob Goroza, Caleb Graham and Benard Bjorndal scored TWU's tries against UBC. Bjorndal has scored three tries over the Spartans' last two Coastal Cup matches.
  • TWU is No. 7 and Victoria No. 3 in the Canadian university men's rugby rankings reported October 5. These are independent university rugby rankings, not U SPORTS rankings.
  • Victoria is 1-1 in the Coastal Cup, following a 36-26 road loss to UBC September 12 and a 45-24 road win over TWU September 18. In B.C. Premier League action last week, the Vikes beat the Vancouver Rowing Club 51-27 on the road October 3.
