THIS WEEK IN SPARTA

LANGLEY, British Columbia – This Week In Sparta has nine teams in action in conference play, including the start of the Canada West postseason for men's and women's basketball. Women's basketball, who finished second in the Pacific Division, will host the winner of Calgary and Manitoba on Saturday night, while the Spartan men's basketball team is on the road in Victoria, B.C., to take on the Mount Royal Cougars in the play-in game. Men's and women's volleyball are at home for senior weekend, hosting the Mount Royal Cougars. Women's Hockey is at home for senior weekend, with second place on the line as they host the Regina Cougars. Also on the road are men's hockey in their final games of the season against the Regina Cougars in Regina, Sask., men's and women's track and field are at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., while men's rugby are in San Luis Obispo, Calif., to take on Cal Poly.

  • The Spartans finished 15-5 in Canada West play and in second place in the Pacific Division. Calgary finished 16-4 and in third place in the Prairie Division, while Manitoba finished 8-12 and in sixth place in the Prairie Division.
  • The Spartans are currently 2-19 lifetime against the Calgary Dinos and 17-15 lifetime against the Manitoba Bisons.
  • TWU last played Calgary on January 19-20 in Calgary. Losing both 90-63 and 77-70 in Calgary, Alta.
  • The Spartans' last win over the Dinos was 88-76 on January 12, 2018, in Langley, B.C.

  • The Spartans are currently 13-12-1-0 in Canada West play, and in second place in the West Division in Canada West. The Regina Cougars are 8-14-2-2 and in last place in the East Division of Canada West.
  • TWU is in a battle for second place in the division, currently tied with Alberta with 27 points. The Spartans have the tiebreaker against Alberta after going 4-2 this season against the Pandas. If TWU wins both games or Alberta loses both in regulation, then TWU will claim second place and a hosting position for next week's Canada West playoffs.
  • The Spartans are currently 9-1 lifetime against the Regina Cougars, having won nine straight.
