Trinity Western University

Andrew Evans enters his eighth year as Trinity Western University’s Director of Rugby and head coach of the Spartans men’s rugby team in 2026-27. Since launching TWU’s current men’s and women’s programs in 2019, Evans has overseen both sides of Spartan rugby while serving as head coach of the men’s team.

Across six competitive seasons, Evans has guided the men’s first XV to a 29-50-1 record in 15-a-side competition. Under Evans, TWU has made two appearances at the Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship, placing fourth in its 2022 debut and fifth as tournament host in 2023.

In 2025-26, the Spartans finished 6-8 and closed the season with four consecutive wins, defeating UC Santa Cruz twice, Western Washington and Arizona. The campaign also included a season-opening 54-3 victory over UBC Okanagan and two spring wins over Western Washington. . 2025-26 schedule

TWU posted a 2-8 record in 2024-25, highlighted by a 34-27 road victory over No. 2 Victoria in the Coastal Cup finale. It was the Spartans’ first Coastal Cup win over the Vikes and their first victory at Victoria. The result left TWU one standings point short of qualifying for the national championship. The Spartans also earned a 29-22 road win over No. 20 Grand Canyon during the spring. 2024-25 schedule

In 2023-24, Evans led TWU to a 3-10-1 record and fifth place as host of the Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship. Following a 12-10 quarterfinal loss to Guelph, the Spartans defeated Calgary 51-12 and Queen’s 27-24. TWU later recorded its first win over Central Washington and drew the University of Bristol 24-24 during a tour of England. 2023-24 schedule

The Spartans went 8-12 in 2022-23 and qualified for their first national championship by defeating UBC Okanagan 40-19. At the championship, TWU upset top-seeded Victoria 23-22 in the quarterfinal before finishing fourth following close losses to McGill and Guelph. 2022-23 schedule

TWU finished 6-9 in 2021-22, its first full season following the COVID-19 pandemic, and won six of its final nine matches. The Spartans posted a 5-1 record in their listed BC Rugby Division 2 matches. 2021-22 schedule

Evans relaunched TWU men’s rugby in 2019-20 following a 15-year absence. The Spartans went 4-3 in their inaugural 15-a-side schedule, defeating UBC Okanagan, Washington, Oregon and Western Washington. TWU also won the Viking 10s tournament in its first competition, with its top side posting a 4-0 record. 2019-20 schedule

Before joining Trinity Western, Evans served as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for Rugby Canada’s men’s 15s and sevens programs. His work included preparing Canada’s men’s team for the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Evans is a Chartered Professional Coach and holds a master’s degree in High Performance Coaching and Technical Leadership from the University of British Columbia. He leads the Spartans through TWU’s Complete Champion Approach, supporting student-athletes in their academic, athletic, personal and spiritual growth.
