Andrew Evans enters his eighth year as Trinity Western University’s Director of Rugby and head coach of the Spartans men’s rugby team in 2026-27. Evans has directed the development of TWU’s men’s and women’s rugby programs since their launch in 2019. As Director of Rugby, he oversees both programs, while serving specifically as head coach of the men’s team.
Across six competitive seasons, Evans has guided the Spartans men’s first XV to a 29-50-1 record in 15-a-side competition. The record excludes 2nd XV, Future XV, sevens, 10s and intrasquad matches. Under Evans, Trinity Western has made two appearances at the Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship, finishing fourth in its national championship debut in 2022 and fifth as tournament host in 2023.
In 2025-26, Evans guided the Spartans to a 6-8 first XV record. TWU opened the season with a 54-3 victory over UBC Okanagan and defeated Western Washington twice during the spring semester. The Spartans finished the campaign with four consecutive wins, beating UC Santa Cruz 82-0, Western Washington 41-29, Arizona 37-17 and UC Santa Cruz 75-19. In 2024-25, Trinity Western posted a 2-8 first XV record. The season was highlighted by a historic 34-27 road victory over No. 2 Victoria in the final match of the Coastal Cup campaign. It was TWU’s first win over the Vikes in an 80-minute Coastal Cup match and the program’s first victory at Victoria. The result left the Spartans one standings point short of qualifying for the Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship. Evans led Trinity Western to a 3-10-1 first XV record in 2023-24. The Spartans hosted the Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship for the first time and finished fifth nationally. After a 12-10 quarterfinal loss to Guelph, TWU defeated Calgary 51-12 and Queen’s 27-24 to close the tournament with consecutive victories. The Spartans later earned their first win over Central Washington, defeating the Wildcats 14-10, and completed a tour of England that included a 24-24 draw with the University of Bristol. 2023-24 schedule
In 2022-23, Evans guided the Spartans to an 8-12 first XV record and the program’s first appearance at the Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship. TWU qualified by defeating UBC Okanagan 40-19 in a play-in match before upsetting top-seeded Victoria 23-22 in the national quarterfinal. The Spartans fell 17-11 to McGill in the semifinal and finished fourth after a 32-31 loss to Guelph in the bronze-medal match. Trinity Western finished 6-9 in first XV competition in 2021-22, its first full season following the COVID-19 pandemic. After competing in the Coastal Cup during the fall, the Spartans won six of their final nine matches. That stretch included victories over Abbotsford RFC, Axemen Rugby Club, Scribes RFC and United Rugby Club, with TWU defeating United twice. The Spartans did not play external competition in 2020-21 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The men’s program continued training and played two intrasquad 15s matches during the fall semester.
Evans launched the latest era of Trinity Western men’s rugby in 2019-20, relaunching a varsity program that had been inactive for 15 years. The Spartans posted a 4-3 record in their inaugural 15-a-side schedule, earning victories over UBC Okanagan, Washington, Oregon and Western Washington. TWU also won the Viking 10s tournament in its first competition, with its top team going 4-0, and competed in the West Coast 7s and Western Canadian 7s Championship. 2019-20 schedule
Along with leading the men’s team, Evans provides strategic direction for the entire TWU rugby program. In his role as Director of Rugby, he oversees both the men’s and women’s programs and works with their respective coaching staffs to create development pathways for Spartan student-athletes. The women’s team operates under its own head coach.
Before joining Trinity Western, Evans built extensive experience in high-performance rugby. He served as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for Rugby Canada’s men’s 15s and sevens programs, including working with Canada’s men’s team at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
Evans is a Chartered Professional Coach and holds a Master’s degree in High Performance Coaching and Technical Leadership from the University of British Columbia. His leadership of the Spartans rugby programs is shaped by Trinity Western’s Complete Champion Approach, with an emphasis on developing student-athletes academically, athletically, personally and spiritually.
