Shane Wiebe has served as the Director and Head Coach of the Trinity Western University men’s and women’s cross-country and track and field programs since returning to the Spartans in 2018. Under his leadership, TWU has produced conference champions, national champions, All-Americans and record-setting performances across the distance, sprint, jump, throwing and multi-event disciplines. Wiebe also guided the programs through a significant new chapter in 2025-26, when the Spartans began competing in the NAIA and Cascade Collegiate Conference while maintaining a limited presence at the Canada West and U SPORTS indoor championships.
In 2025-26, TWU made an immediate impact during its inaugural season in the Cascade Conference. At the conference cross-country championships, Yemane Mulugeta won the men’s individual title and Justin Kiplagat finished second, helping the Spartans place fourth as a team. Ava Rodway placed 12th to earn all-conference recognition and lead the women’s team to an eighth-place finish. At the NAIA Championships, Mulugeta finished third, while David Mutai and Kiplagat placed 18th and 27th, respectively. All three earned NAIA All-America honours as the Spartans finished ninth nationally in their first NAIA championship appearance.
The program’s success continued through the 2026 track and field season. Kiplagat earned silver in the mile at the NAIA Indoor Championships, becoming the first Spartan to win an NAIA track and field medal. At the Canada West Indoor Championships, Dajean Clarke captured his second consecutive heptathlon title with a TWU-record 5,010 points, Jaime Eduardo Martin Huerta earned pole vault silver and Erica Udoh won weight throw bronze. Clarke subsequently raised his school heptathlon record to 5,102 points at the U SPORTS Championships.
In TWU’s first appearance at the Cascade Conference Outdoor Championships, the Spartans collected 11 medals, with the men placing third and the women sixth. Mulugeta won both the 1,500m and 5,000m, while Rui Ramsay captured the 200m title. Mulugeta completed the season by winning bronze in the 5,000m at the NAIA Outdoor Championships, becoming TWU’s first NAIA outdoor medallist. Sheleena Wiley added a seventh-place finish in long jump to earn NAIA All-America recognition.
In 2024-25, Constance Nankivell won the Canada West women’s cross-country championship and was named the conference’s Athlete of the Year before earning silver at the U SPORTS Championships. Her national podium finish made her the third Spartan to medal at the U SPORTS cross-country championships. Mulugeta earned Canada West silver and was subsequently named the U SPORTS Men’s Cross-Country Rookie of the Year.
The Spartans collected 11 medals at the 2025 Canada West Track and Field Championships, equalling their best conference medal haul since 2017. Clarke won heptathlon gold with a then-school-record 5,008 points, while Danny Earles captured the 300m title. The men’s team finished third overall, earning TWU’s first Canada West team medal since 2020. Oke Okumo later won long jump bronze at the U SPORTS Championships, where the Spartans recorded six top-eight performances.
In 2023-24, Nicolas Martin Huerta emerged as one of the country’s top pole vaulters. He won Canada West gold, led a Spartans sweep of the conference podium and was named the Canada West Male Rookie of the Year. Martin Huerta then captured the U SPORTS pole vault championship, while Kenny Blackman Jr. earned national bronze in the 60m. Okumo added a Canada West title in long jump.
The 2022-23 season was highlighted by Brandon Gremaud’s Canada West heptathlon championship. Gremaud scored a then-program-record 4,997 points to win the conference title, anchoring another multi-medal performance by the Spartans at the Canada West Championships.
In 2021-22, TWU earned 11 medals at the Canada West Championships before collecting four individual medals at the U SPORTS Championships. Jaime Eduardo Martin Huerta became the first Spartan pole vaulter to win a U SPORTS title, while Grace Konrad earned national silver in both the 300m and 600m and Gremaud won heptathlon bronze. The 2020-21 Canada West and U SPORTS championship seasons in both cross-country and track and field were cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Wiebe’s first two seasons after returning to TWU included a Canada West silver medal for the women’s cross-country team in 2019 and a conference bronze medal for the men’s track and field team in 2020. In 2018-19, the Spartans won nine medals at the Canada West Track and Field Championships, including four individual titles, before Mowa Adeleye earned U SPORTS silver in triple jump.
Wiebe previously served as the Spartans’ track and field and cross-country head coach from 1997 to 2002. A former national-level decathlete, he holds NCCP Level 3 certification in track and field. His coaching experience also includes working with the Kamloops Track and Field Club, serving as head coach of the Langley Mustangs from 1998 to 2002 and coaching Canada’s sprint, jump and multi-event athletes at the 2001 FISU World University Games.
Before returning to TWU, Wiebe spent 15 years as lead pastor at Southwest Community Church in Kamloops, British Columbia. He is also a certified life and organizational coach and previously served as a volunteer team chaplain with the Kamloops Broncos of the Canadian Junior Football League. Wiebe earned his Doctor of Ministry from Carey Theological College in 2015, a Master of Divinity from Carey in 2010 and a Bachelor of Arts from Thompson Rivers University in 1993.
