LANGLEY, B.C. –Trinity Western goalie Leon Sommer (Linz, Austria) is the Spartan Male Athlete of the Week after backstopping the men’s hockey team to their first weekend sweep in program history with two wins against the Manitoba Bisons in Winnipeg, Man. this past weekend.
On Friday night the rookie made 34 saves, including 13 in the final period, with a .892 save percentage to lead the Spartans to a 3-2 victory over the Bisons.
On Saturday night the human kinetics student had 22 saves with a .894 save percentage to earn a 5-2 win over Manitoba.
The two wins are the first of the season for the Spartans and the first time in their Canada West history that they have won both games of a weekend series.
TWU, 2-8, will be back at home this weekend against the MacEwan Griffins, 2-7-0-1. On Friday the Spartans and Griffins will be at the George Preston Recreation Centre for a 7:15 p.m. (PT) puck drop. Then on Saturday TWU and MacEwan will have an afternoon match at the Langley Events Centre with a 1 p.m. (PT) start time. Both games can be seen live on Canadawest.TV.
