SPARTANS GRAB FOUR-SET ROAD WIN OVER HUSKIES
SASKATOON – The No. 2 Trinity Western women's volleyball team picked up its first win of the season with a 3-1 (25-18, 14-25, 25-15, 25-19) win over the undefeated Saskatchewan Friday at the PAC.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 1-2 on the season after two losses to the No. 1 ranked and reigning CIS champion UBC Thunderbirds to open the Canada West season. The Huskies drop to 2-1.
The Spartans Sophie Carpentier (Ottawa) led the Spartans in the match recording a career-high 15 kills, while Royal Richardson (Rocky Mountain House, Alta.) and Alicia Perrin (Creston, B.C.) each added 10. Kristen Moncks (Standard, Alta.) tallied a match-high 19 digs.
Fifth-year Candace Hueser led the Huskies with 15 kills, while her sister, Jennifer, tallied 15 digs. Middle blockers Kayla Tycholiz and Emily Humbert recorded six kills each.
Saskatchewan led in the first set until the Spartans went on a five-point run to tie and took a 17-15 lead on a service run by Chelsea Wand(Langley, B.C.). The Huskies scored just three more times in the set, while TWU's Perrin and setter Lauren Moncks (Standard) guided the Spartans to the 25-18 win.
The Huskies once again came out strong in the second set taking a 6-0 lead with two Jina Barker aces in the run. Trinity Western couldn't find their footing in the game until 13-4. The Spartans scored the next four points before a Hueser kill returned the ball to the Huskies. Saskatchewan sailed to the 25-14 win.
Trinity Western jumped ahead in the third set 3-1 and continued to capitalize on Huskie errors to take a commanding 12-5 lead. Saskatchewan got the ball back on an Humbert kill down the middle and eventually pulled within three at 15-12. However, Chelsea Tancon(Courtenay, B.C.) returned the ball to the Spartans and helped her team take over the set en route to a 25-15 win.
The Spartans jumped out to an 11-6 in the third set, but Saskatchewan scored the next three points to keep the set close. TWU remained ahead and had a 16-11 lead at the technical timeout. A kill by Wand and a block by Richardson expanded the Spartans lead. After a timeout, the Huskies scored the next three points but three straight blocks by Perrin, Richardson and Tancon put the Spartans back in control. Kills from Richardson and Carpentier finished the set at 25-19.
The two teams will battle again Saturday night at the PAC. Match time is set for 7 p.m. and can be watched at twu.canadawest.tv.
