SASKATOON – For the second night in a row, the No. 2 Trinity Western women's volleyball team earned a four set (31-29, 25-9, 20-25, 25-15) win over Saskatchewan Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.
Alicia Perrin (Creston, B.C.), playing on the right side, powered the Spartans to the win as she tallied a career-high 23 kills, while Sophie Carpentier (Ottawa) added another 13 for TWU. Kristen Moncks (Standard, Alta.) recorded 22 digs and setter Nikki Cornwall (Coquitlam, B.C.) had 38 assists and five aces. Perrin's previous career-high was 19, which she earned against Manitoba Jan. 19, 2013.
Candace Hueser, Jenelle Sokoloski and Kayla Tycholiz each recorded seven kills for the Huskies. Libero Jennifer Hueser had 16 digs.
Both the Spartans and Huskies now sit at 2-2 in the young season after a weekend sweep that saw TWU win 3-1 (25-18,14-25, 25-15, 25-19) Friday.
"It's great to go into and different gym and come out with two wins," said Spartans coach Ryan Hofer. "Saskatchewan has really improved and they played us tough this weekend. We were exploring and trying out different lineups and seeing our strengths. Alicia played very well for us and we're just learning to control the ball better."
After seven set points between the two teams in the first set, the Spartans won 31-29. Matching each other point-for-point, the teams were tied 20 times in the set. Saskatchewan held an 11-8 lead until Perrin returned the ball with an attack down the middle. Trinity Western scored the next three points to take a 12-11 lead. From there, neither team took more than a one point lead. The Spartans took the win after a Huskies attack that sailed into the net followed by a Carpentier kill.
Trinity Western found momentum from the first set win and quickly jumped to a 16-4 lead in the second game. After a timeout, Emily Humbert recorded a solo block to return the ball to Saskatchewan but a service error gave the ball right back. The Spartans marched to a 25-9 win.
The Huskies held the lead for the majority of the third set until TWU put together a 3-0 run after the technical timeout to tie the game at 16. After a Spartans error, the Huskies scored the next three points to regain a 19-16 lead. The Spartans took a timeout but Saskatchewan continued their run to lead 21-17. Trinity Western scored the next two points, but another Humbert block gave the ball back to the Huskies. The Huskies kept control en route to the 25-20 win.
The Spartans opened the fourth set on a 4-0 run and forced Saskatchewan to take an early timeout. The Spartans continued to hold the advantage through the game, rolling to a 25-15 win. Chelsea Wand (Langley, B.C.) tallied the winner on match point with an ace for the Spartans.
Trinity Western returns home to host the Alberta Pandas Nov. 8-9 while the Huskies hit the road for the first time in the 2013-14 season to visit the Manitoba Bisons next weekend.
