CALGARY – Led by Sophie Carpentier and Alicia Perrin with 10 kills each the Trinity Western University Spartans defeated the Mount Royal Cougars in straight sets Sunday afternoon at Kenyon Court in Calgary. The 25-16, 25-20, 25-17 victory improves the No. 8 Spartans to 6-4, while the loss drops the Cougars to 2-10. 

The Spartans' Casie Gano and libero Kristen Moncks, along with the Cougars' Robyn Potolicki, all recorded 10 digs, while Fallon Middlemiss led the Cougars with eight kills. 

The Spartans carried over their Saturday success into the first set, claiming a 25-16 victory. Royal Richardson, Sophie Carpentier, and Alicia Perrin each had three kills while the Spartans racked up eight assisted blocks. Taylor Pelland led the Cougars with three kills. 

Mount Royal raced out to an early 8-3 lead, but after Spartans' head coach Ryan Hofer called a timeout, Trinity Western was able score five straight points. After a 16-12 TWU lead at the midway break, Carly Hamilton recorded three late kills to finish the set with four and give the Spartans a 25-20 set win and 2-0 match lead. Carpentier also added four kills, while Fallon Middlemiss had three. 

The Spartans raced out to a 7-0 lead and it looked like the set was over, but a resilient Cougars narrowed the gap to an 18-16 TWU lead, but the Spartans would pull away on the strength of three late kills by Perrin and claim the set 25-17. 

TWU will now head home to face the Brandon Bobcats on Friday and Saturday November 21 and 22. Match times at the LEC are set for 6 p.m. and 5 p.m. 

Match Notes: The Spartans finished at 24.2 percent (42-18-99), while the Cougars finished at 3.1 percent (23-20-96) attack efficiency…TWU had 14 team blocks, while MRU had 10…
